MIS Primary School

Primary Years Programme at MIS

The PYP curriculum is a key part of the entire M.I.S. educational philosophy because we believe in building the future starting with our youngest learners. Teachers at Mehr-e-Taban Academy go to great lengths to develop the whole child and to foster intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth in each of our students. The core subjects of Math, Language arts, Science, and Social Studies are taught by grade level teachers. The weekly schedule of kindergarten to 5th grade students also includes Visual Arts, Music, ICT, PSPE, Persian, Ethics and French for grades 3-5. MIS teachers focus on developing respectful and responsible students. Analytical thinking, caring, taking calculated risks, communicating, keeping an open mind, seeking knowledge, and being a balanced, inquiring, reflective thinker, are the traits that form the basis of M.I.S. academics.

Curriculum Structure

The IB PYP curriculum at MIS is a dynamic and adaptable framework designed to nurture curious, creative, and critical thinkers. We tailor the program to meet the unique needs of our students and local context, fostering a love of learning through exploration and inquiry.

Diverse Learning Paths:

The PYP encourages exploration, creativity, and critical thinking, emphasizing the development of the IB Learner Profile attributes, such as being knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, and risk-takers. We recognize and celebrate the diverse learning paths of each student.

Inquiry-Based Instruction:

At MIS, our teachers are facilitators of learning. They nurture students' natural curiosity, encouraging them to ask questions, research, and explore the world around them. This student-centered approach empowers students to take ownership of their learning and develop independent thinking skills.

Continuous Assessment:

Assessment in the MIS PYP is ongoing and multifaceted. We utilize a variety of methods, including observations, projects, presentations, and reflections, to gain a holistic understanding of each student's learning process and growth over time. Our focus is on progress and development, not just final outcomes.

Knowledge:

Exploring Transdisciplinary Themes:

Students at MIS explore six globally significant transdisciplinary themes throughout the school year. These interconnected themes provide a framework for learning across all subjects and connect learning to real-world experiences:

  • Who We Are
  • Where We Are in Place and Time
  • How We Express Ourselves
  • How the World Works
  • How We Organize Ourselves
  • Sharing the Planet

The IB Learner Profile:

The MIS Mission in Action: The PYP aims to develop internationally minded individuals. The Learner Profile supports students in this journey, encouraging them to take action for positive change. Students develop agency, express their ideas, and reflect on their growth in the following attributes:

  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Thinkers
  • Communicators
  • Principled
  • Open-minded
  • Caring
  • Risk-takers
  • Balanced
  • Reflective

Key Concepts:

Driving Inquiry: Seven key concepts drive instruction through inquiry, questions, and investigation:

  • Form - What is it like?
  • Function - How does it work?
  • Causation - Why is it how it is?
  • Change - How is it transforming?
  • Connection - How is it linked to other things?
  • Perspective – What are the points of view?
  • Responsibility – What are our obligations?

Approaches to Learning (ATL) Skills:

Developing Independent Learners: The PYP ATL skills empower students to become independent learners:

  • Communication: Expressing themselves and interacting with others.
  • Social: Working collaboratively and developing social skills.
  • Self-management: Setting goals, managing time, and thinking positively.
  • Research: Asking questions, finding information, and comparing ideas.
  • Thinking: Thinking critically and making connections between ideas.

Action:

Making a Difference: Students learn to take meaningful action based on their learning, making a positive impact on their community. This includes participation, advocacy, social justice initiatives, social entrepreneurship, and reflective lifestyle choices.

Conferences and Reports in PYP:

We believe in strong communication between school and home. We offer several opportunities for connection:

  • Welcome Meeting: An introductory meeting at the beginning of the school year.
  • PYP Monthly Meeting: Regular meetings with teachers.
  • Progress Reports (Three-Way Conferences): Held twice a year, focusing on learning goals and growth.
  • Written Term Reports: Provided at the end of each semester.
  • PYPX (5th Grade Exhibition Report): A culminating project where students synthesize their learning and demonstrate the IB Learner Profile attributes. This exhibition is a significant event for the entire school community.
